Professor Chiara Sáez Carried out a Research Stay at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M – Spain) about Audiovisual Policies in Europe

In June 2023, professor Chiara Sáez carried out a stay with the Audiovisual Diversityresearch group at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M) thanks to a travel grant from the Vice-Rectory of Research and Development of Universidad de Chile. The purpose was to learn about audiovisual diversity policies in the European context after the approval of the 2018 Audiovisual Media Services Directive and how they have incorporated the convergence of the audiovisual industry.

The academic stated that “it has been very interesting to learn about the debate surrounding the AVMSD and how it addressed the need to regulate and promote audiovisual diversity by means of quotas, not only in film and television but also in the field of online audiovisual platforms, as well as imposing tax obligations on these companies in the countries where they broadcast contents.”

She also emphasized the AVMSD’s approach to the way in which the audiovisual production generated by social media users may affect democratic coexistence when it comes to hate speeches, terrorism or child pornography. “I think this is an initiative that we must monitor, both at a national level and regarding the possibilities for the Latin American region,” she added.
