The international agreement ratified by our country in 2007 seeks to establish a frame of reference through periodic reports for the development of public policies that safeguard cultural diversity and its local expressions across the national territory.
The lead researcher of #RegulaciónConvergente, Chiara Sáez, is one of the specialists of the National Drafting Committee (NDC) for the Quadrennial Periodic Report (QPR) of the State of Chile.
This group will be in charge of analyzing the progress regarding the application of the UNESCO Convention on Cultural Diversity subscribed by Chile in 2005 in the context of the General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization held in Paris
New Periodic Review
The task of preparing the report falls to the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage, which summons the professionals that make up the committee from the academia, the public sector and the civil society. They are a diverse group of specialists, academics, representatives from ministries and public services, as well as cultural institutions and social organizations.
In that regard, Sáez stated:
“I am very honored with this invitation and hope to contribute particularly regarding media diversity, as one of the interesting aspects of the Convention on Cultural Diversity is that it includes cultural industries as part of its concern, and the media are part of these industries. The digital environment is another variable assessed by the Convention in its twofold industrial and symbolic dimension, which entails new compliance challenges for the states.”
The QPR is a report submitted to UNESCO regarding the application of the Convention by the Chilean State.
It accounts for progress but also aspects to improve, “considering that culture acquires various forms across time and space, and this diversity is manifested in the originality and plurality of the identities and cultural expressions of the peoples and societies that make up humanity“.
