Conmemoración Día del Acceso a la Información

Dialogue with Students on the Occasion of the International Day for Universal Access to Information

Co-researcher Javier García participated in the event organized by the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Communications and Arts of Universidad de las Américas (UDLA), together with the Chilean office of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

García, who is also an academic researcher at the UDLA Faculty of Law, stressed that “in Chile, more visibility must be given to organizations and people that contribute to this right; the perspective of journalists, institutions and the role of citizens are essential to the proper exercise of this right.” He also stated that “information plays a fundamental role in democratic societies, promoting transparency, accountability, citizen participation and informed decision-making.”

The panel discussion featured the participation of the education specialist Sergio Pinto in representation of the UNESCO Santiago Office, who said that “this is the only activity about free access to information that we currently have in the country. Freedom of information, press and the safety of journalists play a fundamental role in the promotion of access to information around the world. UNESCO seeks to empower all people in the right to access information so that it can finally be understood in a critical and systematic manner in any of its areas.”

Students, professors, academics, researchers and authorities of the Faculty of Communications and Arts and the Faculty of Law of UDLA participated in the meeting.
