Academic Patricia Peña is part of Chile IGF.
Representatives of the nine organizations that make up the board of directors of the Internet Governance Forum in Chile (Chile IGF), which includes the Chilean Chapter of the Internet Society led by the academic and Convergent Regulation co-researcher Patricia Peña, presented last August 7th the activities they will promote in 2024 to foster a discussion and dialogue on Internet governance.
In an event held at the Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (FCFM) of Universidad de Chile, the board of directors of Chile IGF, led by Marcelo Valenzuela of NIC Chile, accounted for the heterogeneity of the group that includes, in addition to Patricia Peña, people involved in the development of the Internet in the country such as Ximena RojasUniversidad Diego Portales), Ignacio Sánchez (Institute of International Studies of Universidad de Chile), María Isabel Contesse (Fundación País Digital), Óscar Cabello (Corporación Nacional de Consumidores de Chile), Yerka Yukich (Cámara de Comercio de Santiago), Puppy Rojas (Asociación Chilena de Telecomunicaciones) y Raúl Domínguez (Subsecretaría de Telecomunicaciones).
The co-researcher, academic and president of ISOC Chile, Patricia Peña, said about the configuration of Chile IGF:
“At ISOC Chile, we believe this is a necessary space for meeting and dialogue to discuss the challenges and strengthening of the #Internet in Chile. The Internet is a technology that allows exercising people’s rights, not only as a network technology infrastructure that enables the existence of services and undertakings, but also a network of people and communities.”
She added that “developments in AI and emerging technologies are key today. The implementation of the new Internet as a public service law is strategic for Chile, as well as regulatory developments such as cybersecurity, personal data protection and other citizen rights”.
In the second semester of 2024, Chile IGF will hold a series of webinars every Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. (CLT) from August 7th to October 2nd. It started with the talk “ Fair Share in Chile: Fair or Necessary?", which featured the participation of Lucas Gallito, director for Latin America of GSMA, and Iván Zilic, CTO of PIT for Chile, Mexico and the United States. The activity was moderated by Ignacio Estrada, strategic relations manager of LACNIC.
The issues to be discussed at the various webinars will lay the foundations for an annual event to be held in hybrid modality in Santiago on October 9th at a place to be confirmed.
