Online Workshop with Research Developments on Communication Policies in the Gabriel Boric Administration

Last Tuesday, April 15th, academics Chiara Sáez and Patricia Peña, along with research assistants Jorge Avilés and Diego Cáceres, held a participatory workshop on the communication policies of the current administration as part of the Fondecyt Project on #RegulaciónConvergente.

The workshop, entitled “Communication Policies in the Boric Administration: Assessment and Advocacy Strategies”, aimed to reflect on the follow-up and assessment of the main milestones in communication policies developed in this period and explore potential joint actions to influence these issues in a more strategic manner, considering the scenario of the coming presidential and parliamentary elections.

The activity was attended by representatives of the organized civil society, collaborators and volunteers of journalist organizations and community media, and researchers and academics in the field of communication. It addressed the main milestones in communication policies along four central themes: strengthening of community media; disinformation and digital convergence; public media system; and the role of media in the democratic debate.

The first part of the workshop presented the developments of the research “Communication Policies in the Gabriel Boric Administration: A Mid-Term Analysis”, led by Chiara Sáez and Patricia Peña with the support of Jorge Avilés and Diego Cáceres. This study is carried out as part of the Fondecyt Project on #RegulaciónConvergente and has funding from the Research and Creation Fund of the Faculty of Communication and Image of Universidad de Chile.

Chiara Sáez pointed out that the research addresses communication policies from a convergent perspective: “We understand that communication policies not only focus on traditional media but are also intertwined with cultural, digital and telecommunications policies.” She added that during the workshop, the goal was to convey this perspective through an analysis of phenomena such as disinformation to show how these processes reflect the need for a comprehensive approach that considers media convergence, the focal point of the research conducted in the Fondecyt Project.
