Transdisciplinary Digital Convergence Regulation Nucleus Meets with Guest Academics

The Transdisciplinary Digital Convergence Regulation Nucleus held a working session with guest researchers from Brazil and Argentina to discuss the advances of its Policy Paper, which proposes guidelines for a democratic governance of digital platforms in Chile.

Chiara Sáez, lead researcher of the Fondecyt Project on #RegulaciónConvergente, highlighted the relevance of the meeting with academics Ana Bizberge (Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú) and Marina Pita (Digital Policies Secretariat of Brazil’s Presidency of the Republic):

“The main contribution was analytical. The researchers helped us to formulate the dimensions of the document better and to recognize elements that we sometimes take for granted because they are immersed in the writing. Their external perspective strengthened the structure and scope of the work,” she said.

This work is particularly relevant, as it addresses how the power of digital platforms to define rules and interaction conditions (rule-setting power) directly influences the quality of democracy. Its objectives include mitigating risks such as disinformation and hate speeches, as well as strengthening freedom of expression, information access and cultural diversity in the digital environment.

The session situated the discussions on a Latin American scale, recognizing shared challenges in the region: “These conversations allow us to think of solutions that not only respond to specific crises but also help build fairer and more sustainable governance frameworks. Platform regulation is not only a technical issue but also a deeply democratic one,” Sáez concluded.
