Chile Signs Agreement with Brazil to Safeguard Information Integrity

The initiative seeks to strengthen democracy and reduce the digital gap in these countries.

In the context of the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Chile and Brazil signed a memorandum of understanding on November 19th, 2024 to develop joint actions that promote the integrity of information and fight disinformation, particularly on digital platforms.

Chilean Government Spokeswoman and Minister Camila Vallejo noted that this is the first agreement of its kind between two Latin American countries and stressed the importance of sharing experiences and lessons learned to confront disinformation as a global phenomenon.

In turn, Minister Paulo Pimenta of Brazil’s Social Communication Secretariat highlighted the singularity of this cooperation in South America and the possibility of developing joint initiatives in sensitive and urgent issues.

From the perspective of the Fondecyt Project on Convergent Regulation, it is essential to critically analyze these types of agreements. Although international collaboration is key in addressing disinformation, it is crucial that the resulting policies respect freedom of expression and avoid censorship. In this sense, the creation of a convergent regulator that combines powers from various entities could be an effective solution to guarantee information integrity, in addition to establishing safeguards that protect fundamental rights.

It is also important for these types of initiatives to consider the quality of information sources and promote media and informational education among the population. Tackling the challenge of disinformation in the digital era will only be possible through a comprehensive approach that combines regulation, education and international collaboration.
