Digital Platform Governance and New Challenges for Freedom of Expression

We invite you to be part of the 32nd anniversary of the UNESCO World Press Freedom Day by participating in the event Digital Platform Governance and New Challenges for Freedom of Expression, to be held on Tuesday, May 6th, 2025 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Central House of Universidad de Chile. 

The UNESCO Guidelines for the Governance of Digital Platforms will be presented in Chile at the event. They describe a set of duties, responsibilities and roles for States, digital platforms, intergovernmental organizations, the civil society, media, the academic world, the technical community and other stakeholders to create an environment in which freedom of expression and information are at the center of digital platforms.

After the presentation of the Guidelines there will be a panel discussion based on discussions about this document in the context of the research of the Transdisciplinary Digital Convergence Regulation Nucleus, a project funded by the Research and Development Vice-Rectory (VID) of Universidad de Chile and its program “Transdisciplinary Networks, Nuclei and Academic Collaboration Initiatives”.

First Block

9:00 – 9:30: Inauguration. Remarks by authorities. 

9:30 – 10:30: Conference by Ana Cristina Ruelas (UNESCO Paris). Guidelines for the Governance of Digital Platforms: Safeguarding Freedom of Expression and Access to Information through a Multi-Stakeholder Approach. 

Videoconference. Moderator: Chiara Sáez, FCEI.

10:30 – 11:00: Coffee.

11:00 – 12:30: Panel discussion. Present and Future Challenges for the Governance of Digital Platforms in Chile.
