Discussion Group on Communication Policies in Gabriel Boric’s Administration

Last Monday, May 12th, academics Chiara Sáez and Patricia Peña, along with research assistants Jorge Avilés and Diego Cáceres, discussed the current administration’s communication policies. The activity is part of the Fondecyt Project on #RegulaciónConvergente, and it took place at the Cultural Platform of Universidad de Chile.

Organized in the context of the Information Freedom, Right to Communication, and Independent and Community Journalism Day, the discussion group entitled “A Program between Inertia and Emergency: Communication Policies of the Gabriel Boric Administration” presented the results of a monitoring of communication guidelines in the current administration from a convergent perspective.

The day began with an intervention by Professor Chiara Sáez, lead researcher of the project, who contextualized the regional and national scenario of Latin America and described what the arrival of a young leftist administration that has expressed political will in relation to communication issues has meant.

Subsequently, Jorge Avilés, research assistant of the Fondecyt Project, delved into the commitments and liabilities of Gabriel Boric’s campaign program in 2021, analyzing its degree of compliance in the current scenario. Then, academic Patricia Peña addressed emerging issues and communication policies adopted from prior administrations.

Finally, communications assistant Diego Cáceres reflected on the role of the media in the public communication policy debate. This research has funding from the Research and Creation Fund of the Faculty of Communication and Image of Universidad de Chile.

Sáez stressed the importance of these activities and the role of the academia in public policy monitoring and analysis: “Communication policies have had little visibility in these analyses. The purpose of this event was to survey the public policy field to conduct an assessment and see how it can be improved.” With a critical eye, the distinctiveness of a leftist government was also discussed regarding a democratic deepening in public communication policy.
