The periodic report was presented in the context of the international seminar<\/a><\/span> \u201cCivil Society as a Driver of Cultural Diversity\u201d.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Chile\u2019s report on compliance with the UNESCO Convention on Cultural Diversity was presented last October 10th, 2024<\/a><\/span>. The document, prepared by the National Drafting Committee (CNR), shows the progress made in the 2020-2024 period in terms of cultural diversity in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The academic and lead researcher of #Regulaci\u00f3nConvergente was called in mid-2023 by the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage and the UNESCO office in Chile to be one of the members of the committee, entrusted with the specific task of reporting on measures implemented within the scope of diversity in the media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As she explained, the report has a rigid structure that limits the possibilities of innovation and allows reporting only three key measures. Within this context, S\u00e1ez highlighted:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. The creation of the \u201cMore Diversity, More Voices\u201d working group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. The launch of the children\u2019s educational channel NTV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Chile\u2019s participation in the OECD<\/em> Disinformation Hub.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Importance of the Report<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions<\/a><\/span>adopted by UNESCO in 2005 is a legally binding international agreement that guarantees the right of States to implement policies to strengthen their cultural and creative industries. This framework seeks to ensure that artists, cultural professionals and citizens around the globe can create, disseminate and enjoy a wide variety of cultural expressions, including their own, while reinforcing the organizational structures linked to the cultural value chain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Within this context, diversity in the media is a priority issue for assessing compliance with the Convention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe strategic importance of documenting these measures in the report lies in the fact that in four years, it will allow assessing Chile\u2019s progress in these aspects, identifying pending gaps and, in case of setbacks, generating alerts on compliance with the Convention on Cultural Diversity,\u201d emphasized academic Chiara S\u00e1ez.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The report will not only be a monitoring tool but also a starting point to promote public policies that guarantee cultural diversity in the media and inclusion in the digital environment in the years to come.<\/p>\n\n\n
