Patricia Pe\u00f1a, co-researcher of the Fondecyt Project on #Regulaci\u00f3nConvergente, inaugurated the event organized by the Interdisciplinary Neuroscience Center of Universidad de Valpara\u00edso (CINV) with the conference \u201cDisinformation and the Role of the Scientific Community: Supporting Information Resilience and the Integrity of Information\u201d.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In her presentation during the Eleventh CINV Meeting, \u201cBetween Reason and the Algorithm: Role of the Scientist in the Era of Disinformation\u201d, Pe\u00f1a warned that disinformation not only affects citizens but can also target the scientific community itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cResearchers are not free from being subjected to disinformation, and this is a risk that we need to recognize in order to deal with it in a critical manner,\u201d she pointed out.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Another significant point was the role that journalism has historically had in data verification, which is facing a radically different scenario today. \u201cThe media ecosystem has changed completely. People are no longer who decide what circulates, but algorithms that automate information flows. This forces us to rethink how we understand and handle disinformation in the digital era,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She also stressed the importance of studying this phenomenon from a situated perspective. \u201cStudying disinformation in Europe and in Latin America is not the same. Culture, political contexts and the ways in which we get information are different, and this requires situating the discussion in our own reality,\u201d she stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pe\u00f1a\u2019s intervention initiated a day of interdisciplinary reflection<\/span><\/a> in which researchers and journalists analyzed how science can help tackle the challenges of disinformation in the era of algorithms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
